The Beit Gazo conservation centre has been entrusted with the conservation of a register of baptisms, marriages and deaths from the Latin community of Saida (Sidon) belonging to the Franciscan Monastery Terrae Sanctae of Beirut.
Upon it arrival at the centre, the volume was very damaged. The boards were detached from the text block. The cloth covering was dirty, stained and worn. The sewing was broken and many leaves were detached. The endbands and spine were missing.

As the original binding of the register was in an advanced state of deterioration and its various poor quality elements such as the boards could not be reused, it was decided to carry out a BnF conservation binding. This binding offers an interesting alternative to the full parchment conservation binding: it is easier and quicker to produce and preserves the integrity of the manuscript while ensuring its durability.
